The Department of Journalism was established at Tbilisi State University in 1949 and transformed into the Faculty of Journalism in 1979. In 2005 it merged with the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences as a new Department.

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication offers a Georgian and a bilingual Georgian-Russian BA Degree program in Journalism and Mass Communication; two MA programs that include Mass Communication and Media Research as well as Media and New Technologies; and a PhD program entitled Mass Communication.

At regular intervals, the programs offer students educational courses that accentuate new and important directions in the fields of modern media and mass communication. In addition to theoretical training, students gain practical experience through publishing (magazines and newspapers) and by creating audio, video and online products. They can develop hands-on skills through the Multimedia Center of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences.

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication also promotes journalistic and communications qualifications enabling students and graduates to find employment and to cooperate with existing media outlets.
